No surprise here: PODS lists Knoxville as a top relocation city in 2024

If you live in Knoxville, this probably will not come as news to you. Our secret is out, and people are moving to our scruffy little city in the Volunteer State.

The latest data from PODS reveals that people are increasingly moving to the Southern Appalachian region, which includes states like Tennessee. This region's mild weather, manageable cost of living, and high quality of life are major draws. In particular, Knoxville has made notable gains, ranking 8th among the top cities for move-ins this year.

While Florida and Texas were hot move-to destinations in previous years, 2024 sees a decline in their popularity. Instead, more people are flocking to Tennessee, the Carolinas, and Georgia. Knoxville's growth is part of this larger trend, reflecting a regional preference for areas that offer a better balance of affordability and lifestyle benefits.

Knoxville's appeal lies in its vibrant culture, strong job market, and attractive living conditions. The city offers a combination of urban amenities and close access to nature, making it an ideal place for young professionals, families, and retirees alike. Additionally, Tennessee's lack of state income tax and lower-than-average cost of living are significant advantages.

Knoxville's rise in popularity is part of a broader movement towards Southern cities. Other notable cities in the region experiencing growth include Charlotte, Raleigh, and Asheville in North Carolina, and Greenville-Spartanburg in South Carolina. These cities share similar characteristics with Knoxville, such as affordable living and high quality of life.

Two other Tennessee cities were on the list, including Nashville at 13 and Johnson City at 15.

So where are all these folks moving from? According to the PODS data: California, Florida and Texas.
